A Comparison of Cosmic Ray Composition Measurements at the Highest Energies
نویسندگان
چکیده
In recent years the Fly’s Eye and Akeno groups have presented analyses of the cosmic ray mass composition at energies above 10eV. While the analysis of the Fly’s Eye group points to a likely change in mass composition from heavy to light at energies above 10eV, the Akeno analysis favours an unchanging composition. However, the two groups base their conclusions on simulations using quite different hadronic models. Here we present a comparison of the experiments using the same hadronic model and find that the agreement between the experiments is much improved. Under this model, both experiments measure a composition rich in iron around 10eV which becomes lighter at higher energies. However, the agreement is not complete, which indicates scope for improvement of the interaction model, or perhaps the need for a re-examination of the experimental results. Cosmic rays at the highest energies
After a century of observations, we still do not know the origin of cosmic rays. I will review the current state of cosmic ray observations at the highest energies, and their implications for proposed acceleration models and secondary astroparticle fluxes. Possible sources have narrowed down with the confirmation of a GZK-like spectral feature. The anisotropy observed by the Pierre Auger Observ...
متن کاملImplications of the cosmic ray spectrum for the mass composition at the highest energies
The significant attenuation of the cosmic-ray flux above ∼ 5 1019 eV suggests that the observed high-energy spectrum is shaped by the so-called GZK effect. This interaction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with the ambient radiation fields also affects their composition. We review the effect of photo-dissociation interactions on different nuclear species and analyze the phenomenology o...
متن کاملSignatures of the extragalactic cosmic-ray source composition from spectrum and shower depth measurements
We discuss the differences induced by the assumed composition of extragalactic sources on the predicted UHECR spectrum and the energy evolution of the cosmic-ray shower 〈Xmax〉. We show that different assumptions for the source power evolution do not modify our earlier finding that in the case of a mixed composition the ankle can be interpreted as the end of the transition from galactic to extra...

Nµ/Ne, muon to electron population ratio in extensive air showers at high altitudes has been shown to be a suitable estimator of primary cosmic rays mass composition. This study is based on simulated extensive air showers. The Nµ/Ne ratio has been obtained in 100 depths from the top of the atmosphere to the sea level for different primary particle masses and energies. An empirical relation bet...

A new approach to inferring the mass composition of cosmic rays at energies above 10 Abstract We describe a new approach to establishing the mass composition at high energies. Based on measuring both the vertical and inclined shower rates, it has the potential to distinguish heavy nuclei from light nuclei. We apply the method to Haverah Park data above 10 18 eV to show that, under the assumptio...
